If there were concerns that the highly anticipated second season of "House of the Dragon," premiering on June 16 at 9 p.m. EST was the end, HBO announced a third season just days before the premiere, putting any worries about the fate of the Targaryen dynasty to rest.

The series' renewal for Season 3 should come as no surprise, considering its status as a monster hit for the network. With over 10 million viewers across linear channels tuning in for the series premiere, it set a new record as the biggest premiere for the network. The first season continued to dominate, with an average of 29 million viewers per episode on both linear and streaming platforms.

House of the Dragon was created by George R. R. Martin and Ryan Condal for HBO and executive produced by Martin, Condal, Sara Hess, Alan Taylor, Melissa Bernstein, Kevin de la Noy, Loni Peristere, and Vince Gerardis. The series is a prequel to "Game of Thrones," which aired for eight seasons between April 17, 2011 and May 19, 2019 on HBO.

Based on Martin's book "Fire and Blood," the series takes place about 100 years after the Targaryens united the Seven Kingdoms and nearly 200 years before the "Game of Thrones" events.

The series has been critically acclaimed, nominated for nine Emmys, and won several awards, including The Golden Globe Awards for Best Show.

Ahead of its season 2 debut, fans eagerly await how the deaths of King Viserys (Paddy Considine) and Lucerys "Luke" Velaryon (Elliot Grihault) will affect the power dynamics between the competing factions vying for power. The core cast of actors returning are Matt Smith, Olivia Cooke, Emma D'Arcy, Eve Best, Steve Toussaint, Fabien Frankel, Ewan Mitchell, Tom Glynn-Carney, Sonoya Mizuno, Rhys Ifans, Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban, Jefferson Hall, and Matthew Needham.

Per HBO's official release, additional cast members for Season 2 include Abubakar Salim, Gayle Rankin, Freddie Fox, Simon Russell Beale, Clinton Liberty, Jamie Kenna, Kieran Bew, Tom Bennett, Tom Taylor, and Vincent Regan will be joining the ensemble.

The franchise is set to continue its reign as HBO is currently filming another prequel series, "Knight of the Seven Kingdoms", based on Martin's books Tales of Dunk and Egg.
